The LCHS Musical Theatre Class will present Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana” tonight (Thursday, May 10) through Saturday, May 12, in the school auditorium.

Performances are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening.

Directed by drama teacher Randy Smith with choral music teacher Carolee Hobbins serving as the musical director, the show begins with the character Stephen, who is composing a new musical titled “The Copacabana.”

The play begins and ends with Stephen. As he struggles with the songs, his imagination takes him to 1947, where Lola LaMar (portrayed by Gina Sutton), comes to life as a star-struck, corn-fed country girl from Oklahoma. She meets Tony Forte (Garren Griffin), a struggling songwriter and pianist for the Copacabana, the hot nightclub in New York City, and they fall in love.

Lola soon is befriended by Gladys Murphy (Kyndra Sullivan), a former Copa girl, who shows her the ropes and Sam Silver (Hunter Creswell), the owner of the Copacabana, who can’t seem to keep his toupee in place. The director, Mr. Brill (Tripp Norman), finally hires Lola, with a little help from her friends.

Enter Rico Castelli (William LeRoy), the villainous owner of the Tropicana nightclub in Havana, Cuba, who takes what he wants. He is joined by Conchita Alvarez (Avery Wheeler), the aging headliner at the Tropicana. “Music and passion were always the fashion” – until the shots rang out.

In addition to those listed above, other members of the cast include Gianna Anderson, Zeb Ashmore, Ali Aycock, Rhianna Aycock, Catherine Drew Beggs, T. J. Bradley, Evan Burt.

Chloe Cliatt, Savannah Cliatt, Anna Cox, Robert George, Nakisha Hill, Anna Highsmith, Alexis Hohlwein, Bennett Ivey, Colby Jenkins, Mackenzie Jordan, Rachel Jordan, Jenna Kinzle, Shanna Kneece, Anna Layton, Metz LeRoy, Ross LeRoy, Alexia Norman, Macey O’Neal, Emily Partridge, Jesse Partridge, Sydney Radford, Samantha Richmond, Brook Romines, Noah Rueda, Alleya Saint, Roikayla Tennant, Brandtley Vickery, and Katie Vickery.

Members of the crew are: Lydia Partridge, sound; Aubrey Comtois, lights; and Melanie Powers, curtain.

The glittery, colorful set for “Copacabana” was designed by Frankie Brown, art teacher at LCHS, and her students.

“The musical theatre class has 19 seniors graduating this year,” Smith said. “We are going to miss them. LCHS is extremely lucky to have students with so much talent as well as a strong commitment to excellence.

“Putting on a show with 50 students is definitely a challenge. Carolee and I are both very proud of the cast and crew,” Smith continued.

Smith and Hobbins spend an enormous amount of time and effort each year choreographing the spring play. “Copacabana” marks the 18th spring musical directed by Smith and Hobbins.

Tickets for the production are currently on sale in at the ticket window in the lobby of the school. They may also be purchased at the door prior to each performance. The cost is $12 each for adults and $6 for children 5 and under.

Proceeds from the show will be used to help defray the cost of next year’s spring musical. The box office opens at 6:45 p.m. nightly.
