Ga. Dept. of Driver Services warns of unofficial DMV websites, Apps

Department of Driver Services (DDS) Commissioner Spencer R. Moore urges customers to be careful of third party websites and Apps when trying to access the Georgia Driver's Manual or obtain other driver licensing services and information.

Third party Internet sites such as www.DMV.org and www.Drivers-Licenses.orgwww.Drivers- Licenses.org> are not connected with or sanctioned by the DDS. The list of imposter websites di­rected at Georgia drivers is long, but there are tips to ensure you are on the correct site for Georgia drivers.

"Customers have contacted DDS after they realized that they were on a private DMV site that has charged them for information that is free on our website," said Com­missioner Moore. "DDS does not charge for any training manual or informational material. The of­ficial DDS website is www.dds. georgia.gov and can also be ac­cessed through the state's portal www.georgia.gov."

Most customers arrive at these sites by doing a browser search for "Georgia DMV,"

"Georgia License Renewal" or similar generic searches. Please read the pages of these sites care­fully, because by law they are re­quired to inform users that the site is not affiliated with any State or Government Entity. They are pri­vately owned sites that will have.com or .org at the end of their website address (url).

The official state of Georgia websites will have .gov as is the case with www.dds.georgia.gov.

Those young drivers studying for their first driver's license should be particularly mindful when access­ing any website or App that offers to provide the questions for the Georgia Road Rules and/or Road Signs Test. All the information for passing State of Georgia driver's testing is included free of charge in the Georgia Driver's Manual and can also be accessed online at http://www.eregulations.com/georgia/driver/.

Similar unofficial sites are avail­able for almost every other state. The sites are offering tips on how to pass an exam or other materials for as much as $20.00.

Customers should also be careful about providing personal informa­tion when using external sites. The DDS does not collect any personal information from customers seek­ing to download a driver's manual. DDS Online Services that do re­quire payment are only collected through each customer's online personal account, and personal driver's license information is only needed when that password-pro­tected account is created.

Customers who have reached the private websites by error should contact the site for instructions on how to return any information for a refund. Customers may file a for­mal complaint with the Governor's Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) by visiting their website at www.consumer.ga.govor may call their Intake Department at (404) 651-8600.

As a reminder, the official DDS website is www.dds.georgia..dds.georgia.gov> and can also be accessed through the state's portal www.georgia. gov.
