Georgia Games kick-off 27th season

The Georgia State Games is excited to make this season their biggest yet with additions to their list of championships, and a continuance of the celebration of an Olympic atmosphere throughout the state of Georgia.

Celebrating its 27th anniversary, the Georgia Games, also known as the “People’s Games,” will be offering soccer for the first time in 15 years. Registration for the Recreational youth players tournament ends May 22. On June 3rd and 4th in primarily Cobb County, the top four teams will advance to the semi- finals and strive to be the medal winners (gold, silver and bronze).

“After its hiatus, we are excited to have brought back the game of soccer,” Georgia Games Executive Director Eric Pfeifer said. “We have a full plate of diverse individual sports as well as team sports to represent for this summer.”

The 2017 Georgia Games’ season began in the last weekend of April with wrestling to officially put the Olympic-style sports festival in full gear. Over 700 participants came out to compete and cheer on the wrestlers who participated in any of the three styles: Folkstyle, Greco and Freestyle.

All of Georgia’s residents are eligible to register and compete in this open invitation, grassroots-style, state sports festival. The gold, silver and bronze medalists teams per age group per gender all qualify to advance to the National State Games of America (SGA) being held this year in Grand Rapids, Michigan the first week in August.
