Thomas Wesley Butler

Thomas (Tom) Wesley Butler, 74, of Rotonda West, Florida, passed away on Monday, May 3, 2010.

The family received guests on Friday, May 7, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Gambles Funeral Home, Savannah, Ga. A military graveside service followed at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Savannah.

Born June 23, 1935, in Wilkes County, Ga., he was the son of the late Eva (Nell) Albea and Lemuel (L.M.) Butler. He was a Lincolnton High School graduate class of 1953 who played on the varsity football team. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1953 until his retirement in 1974. Following his military career, he majored in Business Administration at Augusta College. Soon after, he began his second career with the Federal Government at the CDC in Atlanta, Ga. He did extensive traveling as a Medical Records Administrator conducting audits on civilian hospitals. He later transferred to Fort McPherson, Ga. as the Medical Records Administrator for Fort McPherson Army Health Clinic. On January 28, 1983, Tom married his wife Marjorie Lynn Brewer in Atlanta, Ga. He retired from Fort McPherson Health Clinic in October 1999. In November 2001, Tom and Margie moved to Rotonda West, Fla. to enjoy their grandchildren. Tom enjoyed golfing, reading, fishing, gardening, and his animals. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 2710, the American Legion Post 113, and past Post Commander of the American Legion Post in Douglasville, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald (Pete) Butler, Henry (H.M.) Butler and Albea Butler; sisters, Gene Huguley and Esther Bodie; and stepson, Gary Allen Kicklighter.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Marjorie B. Butler of Rotonda West, Fla.; children, Sherrie (Richard) Hill of Columbia, S.C., Leesa Burney of Augusta, Ga., Randal “Randy” (Krista) Butler of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; stepchildren, William “Billy” (Robin) Kicklighter, Jr. of Brunswick, Ga., Lynn (Mark) Anderson of Rotonda West, Fla.; sisters, Audrey Butler and Kathryn Dill, both of Rotonda West, Fla.; grandchildren, Ashley and Amber Kicklighter, both of Atlanta, William Joseph “Joey” and Savanna Kicklighter, both of Brunswick, Ga., Christopher Kicklighter of Savannah, Ga., and Mark and Madison Anderson, both of Rotonda West, Fla.

Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Huguley, Jerry Butler, Marion Butler, Richard Butler, Wayne Helwig, Joey Kicklighter, and Mark Anderson.
