Post 194 selling engraved bricks to honor servicemen
American Legion Post 194 is currently selling bricks that will be engraved as a tribute to active servicemen and veterans. The bricks, which are shown here in front of the Lincoln County Veterans Memorial, are part of an initiative by the post to establish a central location to honor those who have sacrificed so much for the cause of freedom.
American Legion Post 194 is currently selling bricks that will be engraved as a tribute to active servicemen and veterans.
The bricks are situated in front of a monument, donated by Gordon Snellings and Thomas and Janet Dawkins, located at the post home off of the Augusta Highway.
The Lincoln County Veterans Memorial reads: “Erected to honor and cherish the memory of all those who have served and defended their country against all enemies both foreign and domestic through conflicts and wars.”
In the future, an image of a kneeling soldier, with a rifle stuck in the ground and a helmet on top of the rifle, will be etched on the monument underneath the inscription.
Costing $25 each, the engraving on the 4” x 8” bricks is limited to the name and rank of the individual, space permitting; the branch of military service; and the conflict era or service dates. The person must be serving or have served his country honorably.
According to Nelson Noble, post historian and chairman of the brick committee, “The project began in 2005, when we decided we wanted to set aside a central location to honor the active duty servicemen and the veterans of Lincoln County. Work on the memorial has been ongoing for the past five years, with Legion Commander Perry O’Neill serving as the driving force.”
He noted that the monument and the flagpole standing behind the granite structure were installed within the past year. Donations from individuals in the county as well as fund-raisers have helped make the dream a reality.
Concerning the bricks, Noble said, “The engraved bricks are a wonderful way to honor those serving in the military now and those who have served throughout the years. This is definitely a worthy cause.”
He went on to say that 50 of the 300 bricks have already been sold. “We can add more than 300 in the future – we want this to stand as a memorial for years to come.”
