Jesse Vincent Hogan

JESSE VINCENT HOGAN Former Lincoln County Probate Judge and County Treasurer Jesse Vincent Hogan, age 79, died peacefully at his home on Elm Street, Sunday morning, January 31, 2010. He was the son of the late Mosely Hawes and Marjorie Cooper Hogan.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, at Lincolnton Baptist Church with Dr. Adair Blackwood as eulogist, and Revs. Dan Rosser and Lanis Lewis officiating. Interment followed at Lincolnton City Cemetery.

Mr. Hogan was a life long resident of Lincoln County and a graduate of the University of Georgia where he was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1953; he also attended the School of Law at Georgia where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1969. Mr. Hogan was also a member of the Delta Theta Phi law school fraternity. While at Georgia he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve Officer Corps.

From an early age Mr. Hogan had a keen interest in the civic affairs of his community as well as the state, and was successful in his own political ventures having served as Probate Judge from 1969 to 1972 and was also actively involved in the campaigns of several of Georgia’s past governors as well as other state and district officials.

His dedication to fairness for all people was apparent in the just and balanced manner in which he discharged his duties as probate judge, seeking always to treat others with kindness and “the way he would want to be treated.” Judge Hogan’s passion for justice for all citizens extended beyond his judicial tenure into numerous community activities including his generous support of a several community organizations and a scholarship program at Lincoln County High School in memory of his late mother.

He later was the last individual to hold the office of County Treasurer for Lincoln County serving from 1977 until the office was consolidated with the county clerk’s position at his retirement in 1997. Between his service as Judge and Treasurer Mr. Hogan also was a member of the Lincoln County Board of Tax Assessors.

Mr. Hogan was a member of several professional groups including the National and International Association of Probate Judges, the County Officers Association of Georgia and the Georgia Probate Judges Association. He was also a member of Lincolnton Baptist Church

Mr. Hogan was also a successful businessman having been involved in the logging and sawmill industries for many years.

As an enthusiastic local historian, Mr. Hogan was continuously interested in preserving the past leading him to his support in establishment of the genealogical section at the Lincoln County Public Library through funding shelving, cabinets and other necessities. Along with his sister he also donated a complete set of working black smith tools to found the Hogan-Hollinshead Blacksmith Shop at the Lincoln County Historical Park campus. One of his greatest loves was reading and hearing about the past history of this area.

In addition to his sister Shirley Hogan of Lincolnton, additional survivors include a number of cousins, Charlene Padgett, Claire and Allen Walker, Robert and Christie Padgett, Margie and Ron Cundy, Leon and Cindy Penland, Kim Jaeger, Scott Penland, Jake Penland, and Phillip Penland., John Michael and Jackie Padgett.

Serving as pallbearers were Bruce Beggs, Brian Beggs, Kevin Beggs, Keith Beggs, Johnny Crain, Roy Beard, Jr., and Jim Cantrell. Honorary pallbearers include Bobby Parks, Travis Reed, Richard Butler, Roger Williams, Coleman Kennedy, Robert Wilkes, Talmadge Reed, Ben Ross, Guil Mattison, , Eddie Drinkard, James Drinkard, Roy Drinkard, Danny Aycock, Robert Williams and Mike McCombs and Leon Cox.
