Relay for Life to kick off the 2010 season Jan. 19

The Lincoln County ACS (American Cancer Society) Relay for Life will kick off the 2010 season on Tuesday, January 19, at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln County Library.

“The kick-off celebration is a great opportunity for people who want to learn how to get involved in the ACS Relay for Life,” said Melissa Burgess, one of the organizers of the event. “We’ll celebrate the success of the 2009 Relay for Life and kick off the 2010 event. To become involved in this year’s Relay for Life, please join us for the festivities.”

In 2009, the Lincoln County ACS Relay for Life raised $39,831.55 for the fight against cancer.

Relay for Life began in 1985 with one man in Tacoma, Washington, and is now a worldwide movement to end cancer. The funds raised at the various relays help the ACS achieve its mission of putting an end to cancer as a major health concern.

During the all-night event, teams, consisting of from eight to 15 people, will have at least one of their members walking around the track at all times to show support for the ACS and its mission.

The annual relay represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

“For those not walking, there is constant action to keep everyone busy,” said Danielle Truan, a member of the ACS event staff. “From entertainment, food, and games to touching ceremonies and stories of inspiration, there is something for everyone at Relay for Life.

“At each event, we celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer through our Survivors’ Lap and survivor recognition. The strength of the survivors inspires others to continue the fight.

“We also remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those who have survived and are currently battling the disease at our luminary ceremony,” Truan continued.

“At the relay, people who have walked alongside those battling cancer can grieve and find healing. Finally, the relay helps individuals make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer.”
