BECKY RICE LCMS Teacher of the Year BECKY RICE LCMS Teacher of the Year Becky Rice was recently named the "Teacher of the Year" at LCMS.

A native of Augusta, Rice holds a Bachelor of Science in middle grades education from Augusta State University, certificates in special education from the University of Georgia, and a master's degree in education (math and language arts) from Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia.

During her 10 years at LCMS, she has taught seventh and eighth-grade math, language arts, science, reading, and social studies as well as eighth-grade math connections. She has also served as a language arts, reading, and math resource teacher. In addition, she continues to work with the after-school tutoring program at LCMS.

In her comments, Rice said, "The most significant aspect of winning Teacher of the Year is knowing that my colleagues, who themselves are exemplars of the teaching profession, deemed me worthy of this honor."

She went on to add, "Teaching is my opportunity to have a positive impact on the life of a child, helping each student overcome preconceived limitations and reach his potential.

"The best part is seeing a student gain confidence in himself and realize he can do more than he thought he could do and well enough to be truly successful. To help a child gain confidence in himself will enable him to go further than just teaching him the steps to finding the correct answer."

Along with teaching, Rice is also a member of PAGE (Professional Association of Georgia Educators).

Concerning community activities, the gifted educator serves as a Sunday School teacher at Damascus Baptist Church.

She and her husband of 23 years have a 21-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son.

In her leisure moments, Rice enjoys cheering for her children as they pursue their various interests, spending time at the lake with family and friends, boating, and reading.

A profile of Amanda Etheridge, the system-wide Teacher of the Year and the LCES Teacher of the Year, appeared in last week's edition of The Lincoln Journal. Louise Waters, the LCHS Teacher of the Year, will be featured in a subsequent issue of the newspaper.
