Response to letter
TO THE EDITOR
In response to Mr. Doss' letter on July 2. When Wade Johnson was campaigning for county chairman he stated he would like to see a property tax freeze and a senior citizens school tax freeze. He did not know until he was elected what a financial mess he was left by the outgoing administration. He was left with a shortfall of $300,000 plus to be made up by July 1st to balance the budget. He had some tough decisions to make so had to forgo the tax freeze on property and school until the economy of the county improves.
You must not know, Mr. Doss, that the state has issued a tax freeze for two years and it will be reviewed at that time.
The opportunity of one department to stay under budget never happened, always way over the limit. At the first of the year, two departments were $12,000 under budget but instead of giving it back to help with the shortfall, they bought new furniture for their offices.
Some people are certainly ready to criticize and never praise. Mr. Doss, you mentioned the Concerned Citizens several times in your letter. Maybe it would behoove you to attend our meeting and find out what is going on in Lincoln County and the state of Georgia before you belittle what some people are trying to do in helping the county to be a better place to live.
