Covered dish lunch planned at historical park August 5
The southeastern United States has been in a severe drought pattern for the last quarter century. These droughts had and will continue to have a devastating effect on the Corps reservoirs on the Savannah River. Here in Lincoln County, we have the Clark Hill/ J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake. This Corps facility is an integral part of our small county providing drinking water, recreation, tourism, real estate development, wildlife habitat to name just a few of the benefits.
Not only Lincoln County's but every local economy on both sides of the river has been hit hard by these droughts and subsequent low water levels. This past spring, the Good Lord gave us rain and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers made unprecedented wise decisions with this blessing and our lake came up twelve feet in just a few weeks. We are truly grateful to God and to the Army Corps of Engineer's Colonel Edward Kertis' team.
The Lincoln County Historical Society will host, at the Historical Park, a covered dish lunch to thank God and the Corps of Engineers for saving our county. At noon, August 5, 2009, lunch will served to all who bring a covered dish. So "bring something good to eat!"
Organizers ask that all attendees bring their dish to the park by 11:30 am. Those wanting to bring a grill to cook that day are asked to contact history@nu-z.net to arrange space. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs. Tables will be provided. For those who work and will not be able to prepare a covered dish, arrangements have been made with an event sponsor, Dixie Quick, to fix dishes of assortedvegetables. Those working can call 706 359 4625 by noon Monday August 2 and have their covered dish delivered for $6.00. There will be an express lane with go plates for those who need to get back to work. The Historical Society will provide tea, lemonade and ice water. This will be a southern pot luck tradition at its absolute biggest and best.
Lincoln County has the best cooks in the region and will prove it on August 5, 2009. And of course we will have homemade ice cream to set bragging rights until next time.
