Georgia Isaiah Hoffman

Mr. George Isaiah Hoffman, 93, of McCormick, died at his home Thursday, June 4, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at Lutheran Church by the Lake, McCormick, S.C. at 2 p.m., on June 16.

Interment will be held in George Washington Cemetery, Adelphi, Maryland at a later date.

Mr. Hoffman was born November 9, 1915, in Rocky Ridge, Maryland. and was the son of George Elmer and Ella Harriet Hoffman.

Mr. Hoffman joined the Army on January 28, 1942. He served in the Algeria-French Moroccan and Tunisian campaigns receiving a Purple Heart for life threatening injuries he received near El Guettar, Tunisia on March 27, 1943. On November 24, 1943 he returned to duty and was assigned to work in the commissary at Walter Reed. Mr. Hoffman was honorably discharged from the Army on November 17, 1945. Following his discharge he was offered the position of Commissary Manager at Walter Reed under the Civil Service. In 1949 he took a position with the Department of the Army Quartermaster Corps Supply Division retiring June 30, 1972.

In the spring of 1949, Mr. Hoffman, along with his wife and eight other individuals started The Lutheran Church Saint Andrew in Glenmont, Maryland. He and his wife were faithful members of that church until their move to West Virginia in December 2001. In March of this year they became members of the Lutheran Church by the Lake in McCormick.

He is survived by his wife Patsy Ellen; three daughters, Mary Paulette Stefanik, Susan Georgette Crowley and Theresa Ellen Weakley; three grandchildren, Maureen Rose, Angela Thayer and Sean Ruth; four great-grandchildren, Kayla, Andrew, Connor Rose and Miles Thayer.

Mr. Hoffman was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ella Hoffman; a sister, Marguerite Kemp, a brother Raymond Hoffman and two grandchildren, Jennifer Stefanik and Chad Ruth.
