Fifth-grade graduation exercises held May 21
LEVI HOWARD AND EMILEE WOODALL Mr. Fifth Grade and Miss Fifth Grade The fifth-grade class at LCES held its graduation exercises Thursday, May 21, in the school gymnasium.
Following the processional, Jesse Parks led the audience and graduates in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and in a moment of silence and Delexica Durham welcomed those present.
Then, on behalf of her classmates, Janie Logue thanked the faculty and staff at LCES and the families in attendance for their support throughout the years.
Next on the program, Matthew Bentley recited "Through the Door," a poem about a child looking back on his elementary school days, and the fifth-grade class sang "I Wonder," under the direction of choral music teacher Barbara Boddie.
At this point in the ceremony, fifthgrade teachers Julia Leverett and Michael Fogarty recognized the following student superlatives:
Most Academic: Delexica Durham and Tyler Johnson.
Most Artistic: Bonnie Arledge and Zack Crite.
Most Athletic: Ciera Norman and Ryan O'Neill.
Most Musical: Natasia Harris and Matthew Bentley.
Most Dependable: Maggie Dekreon and Chace Scarboro.
Wittiest: Tekia Ware and Martin Hill.
Friendliest: Emilee Woodall and Austin Scarboro.
Miss Fifth Grade: Emilee Woodall.
Mr. Fifth Grade: Levi Howard.
Next, teachers Amanda Etheridge and Sharon Gonzalez presented silver medals to the 22 students named to the Faculty Honor Roll. These students had averages in the 90-94 range for the year.
The silver medalists were Kelsey Anderson, Abbigail Baker, Xavian Banks, JaVaunte Carter, Gabriela Dominguez, Avis Hawes, Levi Howard, Tyler Johnson, Jaelyn Jones, Kate Layton, Adrian McCord, Grant Morris, Ciera Norman, Ryan O'Neill, Presley Partridge, Noah Raiford, Kirk Sapp, Chace Scarboro, Austin Scarboro, Courtney Spratlin, Austin Stevens, and Mariah Stevenson.
The teachers likewise gave gold medals to the 18 students named to the Principal's Honor Roll. Included in this group were students with yearly averages in the 95-100 range.
The gold medalists were Bonnie Arledge, Laney Aycock, Anna Beggs, Matthew Bentley, Olivia Bundrick, Ryan Crookham, Emily Darling, Maggie Dekreon, Delexica Durham, Natasia Harris, Janie Logue, Meagan Mercier, Ashley Miller, Haylie O'Neal, Kari Powell, Sydney Thornton, Tekia Ware, and Emilee Woodall.
Christie Mattison, assistant principal at LCES, and Brian Campbell, assistant superintendent of curriculum for the school system, then presented certificates and congratulatory letters from President Barack Obama to the 26 students who earned Presidential Academic Awards.
To be eligible for the award, a student must maintain an "A" average throughout the fourth grade and during the first semester of the fifth grade, and he must score 850 or above in math or reading on the fourth-grade administration of the CRCT (Criterion Reference Competency Test).
The students receiving the Presidential Academic Award were Kelsey Anderson, Bonnie Arledge, Laney Aycock, Anna Beggs, Matthew Bentley, Olivia Bundrick.
Ryan Crookham, Emily Darling, Maggie Dekreon, Gabriela Dominguez, Natasia Harris, Avis Hawes, Levi Howard, Janie Logue, Adrian McCord, Ashley Miller.
Ciera Norman, Haylie O'Neal, Ryan O'Neill, Kari Powell, Noah Raiford, Austin Scarboro, Mariah Stevenson, Sydney Thornton, Tekia Ware, and Emilee Woodall.
Following the awards ceremony, LCES Principal Marilyn Bell and Brian Campbell presented certificates of promotion to the 79 fifth-graders who will be attending LCMS next year.
Principal Bell concluded the ceremony with words of encouragement for the new graduates, and the students recessed to "Pomp and Circumstance," accompanied by pianist Deborah Beggs.
Serving as honor ushers for the occasion were fourth-graders Blake Beggs, Mikayla Woodard, Abigail Burt, Jacquez Kennebrew, Thomas Mattison, Alyrica Lockhart, Abbie Cox, and Ariel Powers.
