The Kettle Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met April 20 at the Washington Woman's Club.

Chapter co-regent Anneice Butler presided. Ginny Broome, chaplain, led the chapter in the opening rituals and offered the blessing for the delicious meal. Hostesses for the meeting were Anna Gunter, Nina Albea and Mrs. Butler.

Following lunch, Dr. Gerald Smith of Evans, retired Paine College professor, presented the program on early American medical procedures entitled "Revolutionary Medicine."

Introduced by Nina Albea, Dr. Smith displayed an extensive collection of early medical implements as well as examples of early medicines. He also discussed early medical procedures that are considered very primitive by modern standards. Dr. Smith gave many examples of battlefield medical decisions that proved detrimental to the health and well-being of the soldiers; however, doctors were using the medical knowledge they had available at the time.

After the program Mrs. Butler conducted the business meeting during which time reports were given. Mrs. Butler informed the club of the award, the Alma T. Walker Award, given to Carol Faz by Historic Oglethorpe County for her outstanding contribution in history. Betty Slaton reported that five copies of the book, "Heroes of Kettle Creek," will be given to the libraries of the five surrounding counties. Jane Burton announced that a collection for the VA Youth Summer Program will be taken at the May meeting. A donation was given by the chapter to Goshen Baptist Church in memory of the late Frances Cullars Prater.

Kathy Dinneweth introduced the winner and runners-up of the DAR Good Citizen Award Essay Contest as Paige Lowe of Oglethorpe County, winner; Davarious Cullars of Lincoln County, and Hunter Jackson of Wilkes County, runners-up.

It was announced that the next meeting will be May 18 at the Woman's Club at noon. The program, "Southern Pottery," will be presented by Robert Willingham and will include a field trip to his residence on West Robert Toombs Avenue.
