Fixing the imbalance

TO THE EDITOR:

There was something in my letter last week to make everybody mad. What made you mad was anybody deciding what you do with your money. The school board decides citizens need less money so they raise taxes. That upsets citizens. When we questioned how the school systems' spend their personal money that made them mad. The travesty of this analogy is both indignities are "legal."

Lincoln County bickers over taxes more than most because we have an imbalance that is half a century old. When our lake was built in the 1950's, land was taken for a multitude of reasons. With a reconstruction mentality, part of what was taken from Lincoln County has caused an imbalance that we can not live with.

Our trees were taken from us. On Federal lands out west, when trees are cut, the local governments share the money. On Fort Gordon, when trees are cut, Richmond County gets a share. When Lincoln County trees are harvested the money goes to Washington, DC. Lincoln County gets nothing. See why I am mad?

We have to change the law because the law is bad. We have to change the law so that the Lincoln County School System shares the revenue when Lincoln County trees are harvested.

We have a short window of opportunity. Our Colonel in Savannah is a very capable administrator and has made wise decisions to reduce the Federal government's impact on our community with respect to lake management. Congressman Paul Broun has his Washington, DC staff researching this tree problem.

Yes, I made you mad. Feedback was 4 or 5 to 1 agreeing with me. Some of the negative feedback was very negative. I figured that the Journal wouldn't be selling ads based on my offer because I was going to include a "spotted by" in the ad. As long as one can be an Orwellian snitch, the rat is bold.Mrs. Bryan's eighth grade history class had some very savvy comments on my letter. These "children" show wisdom beyond their years.

Teachers had no culpability (dictionary.com) with regards to the false population growth information given to voters. All teachers who were outspoken proponents of the new school should put their money where their mouth was. There were indeed teachers who advocated refurbishing the existing school as so many communities have done to save history and tradition and they should be commended for their fiscal foresight.

If I made your blood pressure go up take a large chill pill. This ain't gonna be easy. We on the Savannah are about to tell a nameless facelss giant on the Potomac what we think he should do with God gave us.
