Pre-K registration beings March 18
      The Lincoln County Georgia Pre- K Program will begin registration for 2009-2010 school year on Wednesday, March 18 at the Lincoln County Board of Education Office, 423 Metasville Road, beginning at 8 a.m. The Pre-K Program is for children who turn four years of age on or before September 1, 2009.

FASF now taking applications for tuition assistance
      The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund recently announced the application period for the 2009-2010 academic year has opened. The Fund has now awarded $2.5 million to the children of U.S. service members who have been killed or permanently disabled in an operational mission or training accident. Students who may qualify are encouraged to apply early.

This year we are asking for your help in nominating homes whose owners are in need of our help. Our work is normally in one of three areas: Painting the exterior, re-shingling the roof, or building a wheelchair ramp and/or porch.

Valentine's Day dance held at LCHS
      The Lincoln County High School's Annual Valentine's Day Dance was held on Thursday, February 12 in the school cafeteria. Hosted by the student council, the dance attracted many students wanting to celebrate the holiday. Every year, students are nominated and then voted on for special Valentine's Day awards.

January is dry month with variable temps for Georgia
      Georgia's temperatures were close to typical last month. Most weather stations reported mean temperatures of only 1 degree Fahrenheit above normal. Macon had the highest departure at 2 F above normal. The Alma station reported the lowest departure of 1 F below normal.

MACK art exhibition sparks evening of festivities downtown
      The Ninth Annual Juried Exhibition of the McCormick Arts Council at the Keturah (MACK) last Friday evening generated an evening of special events downtown. "We had more than 100 entries," said Janice Grizzard, MACK director. "We accepted 77 entries, and the quality of work keeps getting better and better every year.

Students FORKed for this nine weeks
      The FORK (Focus On Raising Knowledge) program is sponsored by the LCHS Academic Booster Club. Each nine weeks teachers are asked to FORK students who have done something noteworthy during the grading period. Students who receive FORK cards can turn them in to the cafeteria for an ice cream.

Foundation offers ten free trees to new Feb. members
      Now's the time to start thinking about the spring planting season, and the Arbor Day Foundation is offering an ideal way for everyone to plant trees when the weather warms up. Every person from Georgia who joins the Arbor Day Foundation in February will receive 10 free Eastern redbud trees.

Extended visit
      Donna Deason Simcox and her dog, Sandy, came to Lincolnton to renew her Lincoln Journal and to attend the Deason Reunion at Hickory Knob State Park. Sandy got sick and had to go to "Dr. Tim" so the three day trip ended up as seven days at the Cullar's Inn.

Salmonella: Tough to crack in peanuts
      For the second time in two years, a nationwide outbreak of salmonellosis has been tied to peanut products. This time, more than 570 people have been sickened and more than 1,700 products have been taken off supermarket shelves so far, in what is now the largest food-related recall in the country's history.
