Irvin issues recall on two food products due to unlisted sulfites

Tommy Irvin, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner, is alerting consumers about two food products from China that have been recalled because they contain sulfites without listing them on the label.

Consumers who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. One of the products is a brand of dried sweet potato and the other is a brand of dried bamboo fungus.

Hop Lee Trading Co. Inc. of 337 Butler Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217, is recalling Flower brand Dried Sweet Potato. The product is sold in a 12- ounce, un-coded, clear plastic package and was distributed nationwide. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-821-2315.

S&M (USA) Enterprise Corp. of 4703 2nd Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11232, is recalling Grove Grow Notes brand Dried Bamboo Fungus Veiled Lady. The product is sold in an un-coded 3.5-ounce, clear plastic bag and was distributed nationwide. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-492-4288.

Both recalls were initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory person- nel revealed the presence of sulfites which were not listed on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reaction in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.

Consumers who have bought these products may return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

No illnesses involving these products have been reported to date.
