Remsen, Kirkland receive top awards at honors night

Sara Anne Remsen and Kimber Kirkland were named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the LCHS Class of 2008 at the 30th Annual Academic Honors Night held Monday, May 5, in the school cafeteria.

Remsen's parents are Gail and Marcy Remsen, and Kirkland is the daughter of Marcia and Perry Kirkland.

This marks the first time one student, much less two, from LCHS has won this prestigious award.

Also during the evening, Brandie Reese, Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce administrator, presented cash awards and framed certificates to STAR Student Abigail Minor and STAR Teacher Lee Robinson. The Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition program is sponsored locally by the chamber.

Reese and Melissa Goldman, chamber president, likewise presented the honor graduates with gold honor tassels and cords, purchased by the chamber of commerce.

Others receiving recognition this year were those juniors who earned the "pass plus" distinction in all four subject areas of the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). They were: Benjamin Beggs, Donnell Harris, Daniel McAlister, and Morgan Reese.

There is no pass plus designation on the writing portion of the GHSGT.

Next, the students who scored the highest grades on each section of the graduation test were singled out for recognition. They were as follows:

English and Language Arts: Morgan Reese.

Mathematics: Daniel McAlister.

Science: Benjamin Beggs, Donnell Harris, Krishna Patel, and Daniel McAlister.

Social Studies: Daniel McAlister, Garrett Matthews, and Amanda Scott.

Writing: Hillary Doss.

The ceremony also included recognition of the members of the literary and debate teams by Lee Robinson, literary coordinator at LCHS. She further congratulated T.J. Carani for winning the state Class A title in Boys Extemporaneous Speaking and presented him with his state patch.

A reception was held following the ceremony.

Academic Honors Night was sponsored by the Lincoln County Academic Booster Club.
