Candidates hit campaign trail as qualifying comes to an end

Qualifying for the upcoming local elections was held Monday, April 28, through Friday, May 2.

The following individuals qualified to run for various county offices:

County Commission Chairman - Walker Norman (D, incumbent) and Wade Johnson (R).

Patrick Martini (D) has been unofficially disqualified from the race for chairman because he failed to submit all of the required paperwork. A hearing is pending.

District 3 Commissioner - Maurice Cadden (D) and Cooper Cliatt (D).

District 4 Commissioner - Allen Walker (D, incumbent) and Rob Robinson (R).

Sheriff - Bruce Beggs (D) and Gerald Lawson (R, incumbent).

Tax Commissioner - Brenda Danner McGahee (D, incumbent) and Kyle Reese (D).

Superior Court Clerk - Amanda Doss (D).

Probate/Magistrate Judge - Lee Moss (D, incumbent) and Joe Banks (R).

Coroner - Paul Reviere (D, incumbent).

County Surveyor - Robert (Chigger) Wilkes (D, incumbent).

Qualifying for offices at the state level were:

United States Senator - Dale Cardwell (D); Vernon Jones (D); Rand Knight (D); Josh Lanier (D); Jim Martin (D); and Saxby Chambliss (R, incumbent).

United States Representative (District 10) - Bobby Saxon (D); Paul Broun (R, incumbent); and Barry Fleming (R).

State Senator (District 24) - William S. (Bill) Jackson (R, incumbent).

State Representative (District 117) - Lee Anderson (R) and Brett McGuire (R).

In addition to the actual election, Georgia Law allows both parties to conduct non-binding "straw polls" to gauge voter opinion on a variety of issues.

The Lincoln County Republican Party has voted to place the following questions on the Republican ballot for the General Primary set for Tuesday, July 15:

(1) As provided for in Georgia Law, should Lincoln County phase in school tax relief for senior citizens?

(2) As provided for in Georgia Law, should Lincoln County freeze real property assessments for tax purposes until the property is actually sold for the increased value?

(3) Should the State of Georgia allocate money from the "Go Fish Georgia" fund to raise sterile grass carp in the new state fish hatchery to control hydrilla in all Georgia waterways?

The last day to register to vote in the General Primary is Monday, June 16.

Voter registration is held during regular business hours at the following locations: the Lincoln County Board of Elections and Voter Registration, located in The Lincoln Center on May Avenue; the Lincoln County Courthouse on Humphrey Street; LCHS; Dean's Beauty Salon on Metasville Road; and City Hall, the Lincoln County Library, the Lincoln County Health Department, and the Lincoln County Department of Family and Children Services, all on Peachtree Street.

Mail-in applications may be obtained at these locations or by visiting the secretary of state's website at www.sos.state.ga.us/elections/ applications.htm.

To register to vote, an individual must:

.. Be 17-and-one-half years old.

.. Be a resident of the county in which he wishes to register.

.. Be a United States citizen.

.. Not be serving a sentence for a felony involving moral turpitude.

.. Not have been adjudicated mentally incompetent.

Once the voter registration application has been approved, a precinct card is mailed to the applicant. If the individual does not receive his card within two to three weeks, he should contact the elections and registration office at 706-359-6126.
