Fiddler on the Roof comes to Lunceford Playhouse in Wash.

Fiddler on the Roof, one of the longest running Broadway musicals of all time, will open at the Bolton Lunceford Playhouse in Washington, Georgia for four performances April 3, 4 and 5 at 8:00 p.m. and on April 6 at 3 p.m. This delightful musical is based on the stories of the renowned Yiddish writer Sholom Aleichem and set to a stage play by Joseph Stein, to music by Jerry Bock and to lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.

It is the story of the struggles of Tevye, the Dairyman (Billy Creel of Washington) and his wife Golde (Rose Wesser of Lincolnton) as they and their community try to deal with the political pressures of Czarist Russia at the turn of the century (1905), when Jewish Settlements were being driven out of the rural regions of Russia. The greater focus of the story has to do with the family conflicts they face with children who were approaching adulthood and challenging the traditions which had given stability to their way of life for generations.

Like much of Yiddish Literature, as well as much of everyday life, the story is filled with robust joy and laughter but also moments of poignant sadness and tears. It is an experience that leaves you laughing, thinking, wondering and certainly humming the memorable songs to yourself.

Many familiar faces of the local theater community come to Washington's stage for this presentation, as well as numerous new actors and actresses who will surprise and delight the audience. "This is a huge undertaking," says the director, Dr. Stan Coe, "But it is the most gratifying hugeness one could imagine. The cast is just full of energy and talent and giving the script their best efforts.

This fantastic company, the youngest is three and the oldest, well, eightysomething, is just filled with spirit of L'CHAIM (to life!) that the play is all about. It is a pleasure to see it all come together."

Under the musical direction of Shay Harris , the accompaniment of Sherry Bower and the untiring efforts of Assistant Director Angelyn Price, "The Fiddler On The Roof," which has been delighting audiences the world over for over forty years, offers a magical and memorable experience for theater lovers of all ages.
