Three LCHS students earn spot in GMEA Honor Band

LCHS band members Joel Dukes (l), Dasha Bussey, and Jazmon Dukes were selected to perform with the GMEA District 10 Honor Band. Eighthgrader Joel Dukes was also awarded the privilege of playing in the Georgia Middle School All-State Band.
Three members of the Lincoln County Red Devil Pride Band earned spots in the GMEA (Georgia Music Educators Association) District 10 Honor Band.

The talented musicians are: senior Jazmon Dukes on euphonium; seventh grader Dasha Bussey on trumpet; and Joel Dukes, an eighth-grader, on tuba.

The students took part in the District 10 Honor Band Clinic February 21-23. The high point of the event was a concert held on Saturday, February 23, in the Alexander Building at the Fort Gordon Army Base in Augusta.

At the state level, both Jazmon Dukes and Joel Dukes made it to the second-round auditions for the Georgia All-State Band. After a very rigorous audition, Joel Dukes was selected to play fourth-chair tuba in the Georgia Middle School All-State Band.

This is probably the first time Lincoln County has had a student to reach the all-state level in about 10 years.

The Georgia All-State Band Clinic will be held February 28 through March 1 in Savannah. The all-state concert is set for Saturday, March 1, at the Savannah Civic Center, beginning at 12 noon.

"We are so proud of our Lincoln County band students for all they have accomplished thus far," said Dr. Becky Barden, principal of LCHS. "The time spent in preparing for such events as these was definitely well spent."

She went on to say that all of the students selected through the audition process to perform in the all-state band are considered Georgia's "cream of the crop." "We are very proud to have Lincoln County represented in their number. I am sure Lincoln County joins me in congratulating these all-state musicians, honor band students, and band director Jasper Dukes for a job well done."

After performing for M.A.D. (Music, Art, and Drama) Night on Monday, March 3, the Red Devil Pride Band will march in the Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade on Friday, March 14.

"The students are looking forward to this trip with great anticipation," Mr. Dukes said.
