A record crowd of 700-plus residents of Georgia and South Carolina met with the United States Army Corps of Engineers Monday, November 10, in McCormick. With the Savannah River Basin in the midst of a 10-year drought of record, those present were concerned about the regulations governing the corps' management of the lakes in the basin. The drought threatens the availability of drinking water and water used for industrial purposes as well as businesses that depend on the lake for their survival. It was determined that the solution to the problem will depend on cooperation between the federal government, the two states involved, and other invested parties from Tallulah Gorge to the mouth of the Savannah River. Pictured are: (l-r) Jim Hussey CSM (USA-RET), regional representative for Senator Saxby Chambliss; Dr. Bud Badr, chief of hydrology for the South Carolina DNR; and Col. Ed Kertis, commander of the Savannah River Basin Project for the corps. More...

The saying "Behind every great man is a great woman" is listed in the Dictionary of American Proverbs as having "no known source." It is not even listed in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. I have a theory about that. I contend that the saying was not used until after 1942 when Weems and Margaret Pennington got married. More...
The Rise & Fall of Colors
We've had a beautiful fall for a change. Previous autumns have been disappointing due to the drought. Certain weather factors have to lineup to produce the best colors, and lately they haven't, but when they do, the results are stunning and this year's foliage dazzled the eye. It's sad to see the beautiful leaves fall. More...
