      Did you know that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends that all children 6 months to 18 years get vaccinated against the flu each year? USDA to implement public access incentive for CRP
      Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer today said that USDA would fully implement President George W. Bush's directive to offer incentives to farmers and ranchers for opening up their land in the Conservation Reserve Program to the public for hunting, fishing, bird watching and other recreational activities.

USDA offers additional incentives for bottomland hardwood, wetlands
      USDA has announced that additional payment incentives are being provided through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to agricultural producers to encourage enhanced wetland and bottomland hardwood conservation. Included are practice, signing and soil rental rate incentives.

Ground breaking ceremony held for new medical center
     Self Regional Healthcare of Greenwood broke ground for the new Savannah Lakes Medical Center last Tuesday. Located at 207 Holiday Road, the 7,400 square foot center will allow for the expansion of both primary care and specialty services at the site. Participating in the groundbreaking for the new $3 million complex were, from left: Hazel Hughes, Chairman of the Self Regional Board of Trustees; Dr. Todd Gonzales of Savannah Lakes Medical Center; Jim Pfeiffer, President and CEO of Self Regional; Charles Jennings, Chairman of McCormick County Council; Roy Smith, Mayor of McCormick; and David Twiggs of the Savannah Lakes Property Owners Association. Contractor will be John W. Spratlin & Sons Commercial Construction of Lincolnton. Construction is expected to be completed late next year.

DISINFECT PRUNERS
      Disinfect pruners between cuts when removing diseased tissue from plants, say experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service. Most authorities recommend a 1:10 solution of bleach and water. But it can be cumbersome to carry a bucket of this mix about in the garden. The solution is corrosive, too, and must be rinsed from tools after use.
