Campbell gives preview of Friday night's game
"When it comes to all Lincoln County-Washington-Wilkes games, you just don't know," said Larry Campbell, head football coach and athletic director at LCHS. "It's a great rivalry."
The Red Devils will face archrival Washington-Wilkes on Friday, October 17, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Buddy Bufford Field.
In his comments on the Tigers, Coach Campbell said, "Their skill players are unbelievable. By far, this is the best football team we've faced to date."
A few of the players to watch are:
..RB Eric Scott (#11) - - Scott is ranked among the top sophomore running backs in the nation by Jim Stefani.
.. QB Teverrius Jones (#5) - - "At 205 pounds, Jones is an exceptional football player," said Campbell.
.. WR/DB De'Andre Stewart (#1) - - The coach referred to Stewart as an "outstanding back and receiver."
.. LB Tyrance Ashmore (#50).
.. DT/OT Tyrece Ashmore (#70) - - Ashmore is a four-year starter.
In addition to the skill positions, Coach Campbell said he is also impressed with the Tigers' offensive and defensive lines. "They are huge up front, with two kids over 300 pounds."
The coach went on to note that Washington-Wilkes barely got beat by Class AAA Thomson (13-7). He likewise referred to the Tigers' trouncing by Blessed Trinity. "Blessed Trinity is ranked pretty high in the Class AA polls, and their quarterback didn't play."
As for Friday night's game, Campbell said, "The Lincoln County-W-W rivalry is a tradition. One or the other is supposed to be the favorite, but the favorite seldom wins. I don't know who the favorite is at this point."
Both teams suffered some injuries earlier in the season, but Campbell indicated that, to his knowledge, everybody is supposed to be playing. "Neither team has any major players out," he said.
The coach did, however, point out that the game, which takes place at the end of fall holidays, could not have come at a worse time. "Being out of school makes it tougher getting everybody to practice."
It may be tougher, but not nearly impossible, if it involves Coach Campbell and the Red Devils.
Advance tickets to the game may be purchased at the main office at LCMS for $6 each.
Moreover, fans are reminded to wear read, so there will be a "red out" at the game.
