Georgians to benefit from tax holiday

Georgians will have the opportunity to purchase qualified energy as well as water efficient products, with no state or local sales tax, beginning at 12:01 p.m. Thursday, October 2, and continuing until Sunday, October 5, at midnight.

All products with the Energy Star and/or WaterSense designations will be exempt from the state sales and use tax.

A broad range of merchandise, costing up to $1,500, marked with the Energy Star logo, and purchased for personal use, is included in this unique incentive.

Specifically, the sales tax exemption applies to Energy Star-qualified dishwashers, washing machines, room air conditioners, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs,

dehumidifiers, programmable thermostats, refrigerators, doors, and windows.

In addition to the up-front cost savings provided by the sales tax holiday, Energy Star appliances, electronics, and lighting use less energy than older models, so consumers also save money on the operations end.

To learn more about what Energy Star is and how the purchase of an energy efficient appliance can save energy and money, while protecting the environment, visit the following website: www.energystar.gov.

WaterSense products will likewise be exempt from sales tax this weekend. Among these items are bathroom sink faucets and faucet accessories, such as aerators; shower heads; high-efficiency toilets and urinals; and weather or sensor-based irrigation controllers.

A partnership program, sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), WaterSense products make it easy for Americans to save water and pro- tect the environment at the same time. Many products are available and do not require a change in one's lifestyle.

In essence, the WaterSense designation indicates that a certain product meets water efficiency and performance criteria - - that it is engineered to perform well, help save money, and encourage innovation in manufacturing.

For more information about WaterSense products, navigate to www.epa.gov/watersense.

The sales tax holiday is intended only for individuals and their personal use. It does not apply to purchases made for resale, purchases by businesses, items leased or rented, or items sold at sports facilities, theme parks, restaurants, public lodging establishments, and airports.
