Number crunching
      TO THE EDITOR I have been following the Journal's reporting on BOC and BOE tax rate setting. Preliminary data were published in the Aug. 28th edition. It appears that our property tax bills will be going up - again. This prompted me to contact the governor's office for further data. Then, I did some number crunching of my own.

Justify tax increase
      TO THE EDITOR Last week's headline article announced public hearings set to discuss intended education tax increases in Lincoln County of 15.53%. Also, on page 8, a five-year history of the county tax digest and tax levies was provided, indicating a proposed increase in 2008 education taxes of 22.71%.

      TO THE EDITOR The Lincoln County Food Pantry has been a successful ministry. Churches, individuals, and businesses unify in an effort to feed those who are hungry. Volunteers give of their time in order to help others in need. Given the economic situation and unemployment, we are faced with an increase in clients.

      Ripe muscadines are falling. Leaves are drifting from river birch trees, squirrels are chewing up pinecones, and roosters have been crowing all over the place. That can mean only one thing: it's the second week in September and time for the South Carolina/Georgia game.
