ACS to hold training class for licensed cosmetologists Aug. 11

Horse owners urged to protect animals from EEE
      Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin is urging horse owners to take precautions to protect their animals from Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), commonly called Triple E, is a mosquito-borne virus that causes inflammation or swelling of the brain. In horses, it is fatal 70 to 90 percent of the time.

      The scary two-and-a-half-inch wasps hovering over Julie Barkley's flowerbeds drove the Athens, Ga., resident inside and to her computer. "I have three children, and we avoid the outdoors because not only of the size of this insect but of the vicious appearance, too," she said.

Irvin releases latest figures on DCSP
      Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has announced the latest figures on the statewide Dog and Cat Sterilization Program (DCSP). Since January 2008, more than $198,000 has been earned through sales of Dog and Cat "Buddy" license plates, donations to the program's state income tax checkoff and direct donations.
