Two nationwide check scams undercovered by revenue dept.
      The Georgia Department of Revenue has uncovered two nationwide check scams that involve fake DOR checks and incorrect banking information. In the first scam, individuals receive a letter from a Canadian-based company which states "your grant in the amount of $50,000 (Fifty Thousand Dollars) has been approved.

New state contractor licensing requirements go into effect July 1
      Governor Sonny Perdue signed the Licensing of General Contractors Bill, Senate Bill 115. Senate Bill 115 amends Chapter 41 of Title 43 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to residential and general contractors.

     The first-ever Lincoln County 4-H Steer & Heifer Shootout was held Saturday, June 14, at Serendipity Farm on Lovelace Road. Tips offered to help elderly stay cool in extreme heat
      The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services is offering tips to help older adults stay cool and avoid heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion. "Extreme heat is a problem for our aging population," said Maria Greene, director of Division of Aging Services.

      A fishing tournament for kids up to age 16 was held at the Cox Farm on Saturday, June 14, 2008. Thirty kids participated in the tournament and 68 fish were caught. Following the tournament, lunch was served and prizes and coupons were given to all kids who participated.

Remsen to seek re-election to District 2 seat
      Gail Remsen has announced her intention to seek re-election to the District 2 seat on the Lincoln County Board of Education. She was first elected to the board in November of 2005 to fill the unexpired term of Marcy Remsen, who had to resign because of a law stating that a person cannot hold an elected office while working for an elected county official.

      Lincoln County residents are reminded that they have two more days to qualify to run for nonpartisan offices in the November 4 General/Nonpartisan Election. Candidates may qualify at the Lincoln County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office, located in The Lincoln Center, from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday) and from 9 a.m. until noon on Friday.
