There are two news items from the library that everyone needs to know about. One is the Summer Reading Program now in progress, and the other is the 2009 Lincoln County Historical calendar which Friends of the Library is producing again this year after a one-year hiatus.

The Summer Reading Program started May 23 and will continue through July 25. Young readers who read 50 books or accumulate 15 hours of being read to will win a certificate and a prize package. The prize package will contain coupons from Sonic, Stevie B's, Applebees, and puttputt golf. Age ranges for the program are birth through 5th grade and for the Teen Summer Reading Program 6th through 12th grades. Teens must read 15 hours to qualify for prize packages. On July 9 at 10:30 a.m. the library will have a puppet show that all ages will enjoy. Watch The Lincoln Journal for more details on that.

Thanks to Keats Thackston and Shirley Dawkins for hours of work, Friends of the Library will again be producing the historical calendar which has been such a hit. The 2009 version will contain some surprises and will be a very limited edition. This year we don't want to have a single one left over. They will also be coming out in the fall, early enough for everyone to get copies as Christmas gifts for family and friends. Many of the county's merchants will be approached in the next two weeks to buy advertising in the calendar to help offset costs of printing. We are very excited about being able to offer the calendar again and about the cover and dedication.

Our spring book sale was a great success, thanks to the good people of Lincoln County and the visitors to the Lewis Family Music Festival at the park. We made close to $500, and the membership drive has brought in much more. FOL is making a sizeable donation to the library for young adult books. Some of those are already on the shelves for the Summer Reading Program. We are so thankful for the generous people in this county. And it's not too late to join FOl if you haven't.

We're getting more SCRABBLE players, too. The SCRABBLE CLUB meets every first Sunday afternoon at the Dova Partridge Annex from 2 till 5 p.m. We play two games in tables of three players each. Our next games will be Sunday, July 6. FOL provides munchies for the group. Players between twelve years old and ancient are invited to come and match wits. This is a gentle group.

New members are Individual Membership: Addie Sue Talbert, Ann C. Flanigan, and Robin Moneypenny; Family Membership: Cindy and James Leroy, Rosalene and Benice Graham, Norma and Boyce McKinney, Buddy and Lavina Marlow, Charles and Elizabeth Estes; Patron: Betty and Billy York. The Yorks also give four magazine subscriptions each year. These include Newsweek, Scientific America, The Atlantic Monthly, and a foreign affairs magazine.
