Had any good tomatoes lately?
News for Families & Consumers
      This is the time of year we usually enjoy tomatoes at my house but this year is a little different. Since we didn't plant as early as years gone by our harvest is yet to come. There aren't any tomatoes on the counter top waiting to ripen for now. And I cannot tell you how long it has been since I purchased tomatoes.

Mad about permits

      TO THE EDITOR: This week I replaced the roof on a house that was given to me when I bought five acres of briar patch land. I don't know if you people know that you will pay four times any time you have to do any improvements on anything you own.

FSA county committee nominations are underway through August 1
      Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer announced farmer and rancher candidate nominations began June 15 for local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees. The nomination period continues through August 1, 2008. Elections take place this fall.

Library Check-Out
      There are two news items from the library that everyone needs to know about. One is the Summer Reading Program now in progress, and the other is the 2009 Lincoln County Historical calendar which Friends of the Library is producing again this year after a one-year hiatus.

Fund set up
      A special bank account has been set up at Farmers State Bank to benefit Lou McKellar and her daughter, Kelli, whose house burned during a recent move. Insurance had not yet been transferred to the new house, and smoke damage was extensive. Donations may be mailed to: Farmers State Bank, P.O. Box 99, Lincolnton, GA 30817.
