Area health fair April 19
      More than 650 people are expected to take advantage of the free health services offered at the McDuffie County Health Fair Saturday, April 19th, at Thomson High School, Thomson Georgia, from 8 until 12:00 noon. This is the 31st year of the event that draws large numbers to Thomson for free health screenings.

Benefit dinner for Junior Turner
      The Christian Service Organization of Fishing Creek Baptist Church is planning a Country Cooking Supper 6-8 p.m., Sat., April 26. Cost is $6 for all you can eat. Take out plates will be available. All proceeds benefit Frank Turner, Jr. (known as Junior), who has many health problems.

      The 14th Annual Georgia 4-H Benefit Horse Auction will be held Saturday, April 26, at the University of Georgia Livestock Instructional Arena, in Athens, in conjunction with a benefit sale for the UGA Equine Science Program. The combined sale is being promoted as the 1st Annual Bulldog Bonanza Benefit Horse Sale. The arena is located at 2550 South Milledge Avenue.

Boating safety course offered
      The Thurmond Lake Sail & Power Squadron, the Army Corp of Engineers (J.Strom Thurmond), and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are offering "America's Boating course". The course will be on Saturday, May 10 from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm and will be taught at the Thurmond Lake Visitors Center, North of the dam in South Carolina on Route 221.

GBA celebrates missions and missionaries at FBC April 26
      The historic Georgia Baptist Association will celebrate missions and missionaries in a series of events that will provide folks the opportunity to interact with 24 missionaries from around the world. Eight international missionaries from various countries will display artifacts from their ministry areas and be on hand to tell what God is doing through them on foreign soil.

Students must register for ACT testing by May 9
      The next ACT test administration for college-hopeful high school students is Saturday, June 14, 2008. Students who wish to take the exam on this date must register online or have their paper registrations postmarked by the end of the day May 9. The late registration postmark deadline is May 23 (an additional $19 fee is required for late registration after May 9).

New website makes it easier to connect to after school programs
      The Department of Human Resources' 270 After School and Summer Learning programs serve thousands of students across the state each year. To make it more convenient for parents, students, schools, community organizations, and others to connect to these programs, DHR's Afterschool Services Program has launched a new Web site, www.after schoolservices.net .

      Those considering running for office in Lincoln County as Republicans should note that qualifying for those races will be conducted April 28 through May 2 at 2957 Maxim Road. Hours will be 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. - noon, Friday. There will be no notary or copy machine available at this location.

Power chairs avail.
      The Senior Wheels USA Program makes available Power Wheelchairs to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. The power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk safely, nor self propel a manual wheelchair, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program.

      Water makes up 98.5 percent of the lettuce plant, say experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service. The Irish potato has 70 percent water. If water is lacking, all other things tend to back up.

      Georgia's State Wildlife Action Plan earns top ratings for its consideration of rare plant conservation, according to a recent report by NatureServe, an international conservation organization.

Citizens training program offered by BRW Assoc.
      The largest single source of water pollution in Georgia is erosion and sediment runoff from construction grading sites. Most of it is supposed to be kept on-site. You can learn how to know when stormwater runoff is being properly controlled on construction sites with a free program that is open for public participation.

DISINFECT PRUNERS
      Disinfect pruners between cuts when removing diseased tissue from plants, say experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service. Most authorities recommend a 1:10 solution of bleach and water. But it can be cumbersome to carry a bucket of this mix about in the garden. The solution is corrosive, too, and must be rinsed from tools after use.
