Devils fall to Aquinas; take two from Twiggs
The Lincoln County Red Devils entered the week with a 5-3 record, including a 3-0 mark in region play. The previous week showed the Devils were ready to contend in the region, with a big win over Glasscock County. This week, the team faced their number one opponent in the region, Aquinas, and also hosted a double-header against Twiggs County. The Devils came out of the week with two wins, but could not top the Irish.
Lincoln and Aquinas held each other hitless through two innings, with starter Crafton Reed picking up two early strikeouts. But an error started a rally in the third for the Irish, which resulted in a five-run inning after a grand slam cleared the bases. The Devils picked up their first run in the fourth when Josh Hollimon doubled in Larry Reeb, bringing them back to within four runs.
However, Aquinas got the run back in the fifth on an error. The Irish broke it open in the sixth, scoring four runs for a nine-run lead. The Devils were able to bring home two more runs in the home half of the sixth on errors and passed balls, but the damage was done. The Irish gave LCHS their first region loss of the season with a 10-3 score.
Lincoln County had the rest of the week to prep for the Friday doubleheader against Twiggs County. They hoped to rebound, and it did not take long to do just that. The Devils jumped to an early three-run lead in the first inning on RBI's by Reed, Austin Goldman and David Lee. They added another in the second inning on an RBI double by Reed. A solo homer by Hollimon in the third gave the Devils a five-run lead before Twiggs finally put a run on the board in the fourth off starter Dalton Tankersley. Goldman, Reeb, Vance Tarver and Chris Leverett recorded RBI's in an eight-run fourth inning that sealed the game for LCHS. The game was called in the fourth, with the Devils taking a 13-2 win.
The second game's outcome was similar for the two teams. Twiggs took the lead in the first inning off Goldman with a single that drove in a run, but Lincoln quickly grabbed a two-run lead in the home half of the first on an RBI single by Goldman and a tw0-RBI single by Hollimon. They added three more in the second inning on an RBI double by Reeb, an RBI single by Reed, and an error that brought home the sixth LCHS run.
Another run was added on an error in the third for the Devils, but the fourth inning is when they broke it open, scoring seven runs to take a 14-2 lead. Before the inning could end, the game was called and the Devils took the second game of the series by that score. The double-header was highlighted by strong pitching performances from Tankersley and Goldman.
Leading batting averages for the Devils after eleven games to Reed at .565 and Hollimon and Goldman at .560. Top three ERA's belong to Goldman at 0.84, Tankersley at 2.04 and Reed at 3.22.
Lincoln County will hit the road for a key region game Tuesday against GMC. They play a home game Friday against Wilkinson County.
