Memorial service conducted at Dist. 11 meeting
THE FOUR CHAPLAINS American Legion Post 194, Lincolnton, Ga., hosted the American Legion District 11 meeting on Sun., March 9. The meeting was attended by District Post officers and members representing the American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion.
A memorial service was conducted, honoring The Four Chaplains. The Four Chaplains were four U.S. Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other soldiers during the sinking of the USAT Dorchester during World War II. They helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains were Rev. George L. Fox, Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Catholic Priest John P. Washington and Rev. Clarke V. Poling. All four chaplains were posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Distringuished Service Cross. Following the memorial service, a barbecue chicken luncheon prepared by the Auxiliary Ladies and early rising Legionnaires was served to all guests. District meetings were held for the Legionnaires and Auxiliary Ladies and tours of the renovated portion of the post facility were conducted.
