National Agriculture Week is March 16-22
Where does your food and fiber come from? That is a good question for the American people because some people know and a lot people don't have any clue!!!!
This week is a celebration of American Agriculture. Many times agriculture goes unnoticed and unappreciated everyday.
The food and fiber produced in this country is extraordinary. It regulates your life and mine because we eat and drink good food and we wear quality clothing to protect us and keep us warm. We know that food and fiber doesn't just arrive at the grocery or clothing store there's an entire industry dedicated to providing plentiful and safe food for consumption . . . as well as a wide range of comfortable, fashionable clothing choices. We rely on agriculture for the very necessities of life. From beef and pork to cotton and corn, agriculture is working harder than ever to meet the needs of Americans and others around the world.
So who is responsible for our quality of life that all nations in the world envy us for? The agricultural producer or plain old farmer is the answer. He or she dedicates their life so that others will be properly fed and clothed.
In the past couple years the American farmer has endured a lot to do what they do. They battle rising fuel, feed and fertilizer costs; enduring record drought conditions, maximizing little or no hay to get through the winter months and most of all they are at the mercy of mother nature. Their work sometimes seems to be unprofitable however some how and some way a crop is cultivated. I've heard on old farmer say,"I farm because it's just in me". Well, I am thankful for that farmer's conviction and faith to see his crop to fruition. The Almighty has commanded only a few to till the land and this is evident because one American farmer produces enough food to feed 144 people.
Here in Lincoln Co. we have a farm gate value of about 15 million dollars (ex. beef cattle, timber and other agricultural items). Beef cattle are our leading commodity. We have small to large cow-calf producers that sell weaned calves that will be fed out in the Midwestern states feed lots and harvested for their meat. Somewhere in our country somebody is enjoying a juicy hamburger or steak from a Lincoln Co. Farm.
