Citizens encouraged to be wary of certain solicitors

Citizens need to be wary of certain solicitations they may receive by mail, fax, or e-mail, according to Bruce Beggs, clerk of Lincoln County Superior Court.

"These solicitors offer to obtain certified copies of deeds, plats or other real estate documents for a fee approaching $100," noted Beggs. "With little or no basis in merit, they use innuendo to convince individuals that they are at risk of identity or property theft if they do not take advantages of their company's services.

"While it may be legal to provide these services, it appears to be unethical, because the solicitors are preying upon the consumer's fear of having his identity stolen."

Beggs pointed out that citizens may request a certified copy of a deed or any other public document from his office at a minimal cost. Usually, the fee is $1 per page plus a $2.50 certification fee.

In other comments, the clerk of court said he felt the need to bring this to the attention of county residents to prevent them from being victimized by solicitors who are seemingly out to take advantage of them.

Anyone having any questions regarding an inquiry about a deed or related items should feel free to contact the clerk of court's office at 706- 359-5505.
