To the Editor TO THE EDITOR Dear Lincoln County: Thanks for making your Pioneer Day a huge success. We had a crowd that some estimated was just under 3000 for the day. As guests from out of town outnumbered us about two to one, we were able to show off what a great hometown we have in Lincolnton. We had visitors from all over the CSRA plus Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina and that was just the ones I talked to personally. Yes, Lincolnton is a great hometown with just the right mix of historical memories and a cautious eye to the future. The 100 year old Hogan Harper Country Store from Woodlawn is just one of our memories. The Country Store is the latest addition to Lincoln County's Historical Park. If you add up all the ages of the buildings in the History Park that the Historical Society has saved, it is well over 1000 years of Lincoln County memories. This is not an easy job and frankly it takes a lot of money. We are asking individuals for help in finishing the Country Store by sponsoring some of the remaining work. A donation of $50.00 will stone one of the cinder block footings. A donation of $100.00 will provide a metal sign for the outside walls. A donation of $500.00 will replace one of the display cases that has been lost over time. We selected this store to represent all the country stores that served a vital need in our community over a century ago. A link to the outside world not only in goods but in news, ice, clothes and everything else that our ancestors could not make or grow themselves. Our children have no idea about things like that having grown up in the "money comes from an ATM not work" generation. Please help us not only with the remaining physical work on Lincoln County's country store but to preserve your personal memory of your country store. All sponsors will be recognized on a plaque inside the store and will have their favorite country store memory saved in the Historical Society's Archives and published in the Lincoln Journal. Did you pick up coke bottles out of the ditch on the way a store and sell them to buy a bag full of candy? Remember the hoop cheese and a cracker? Was your first job in your family's store? Did you ever "sign the book?" Did you ever hunt rabbits all the way to the Woodlawn store, get a Nehi and then hunt all the way back home in the afternoon? Did you ever gather eggs and sell the best ones to the store? What do you remember? What have we forgotten? What are we teaching our children? Help us save our past. Write down your favorite country store memory then contact the Historical Society or by email at history@nu-z.net. Thank you so much.
And an apology to all those who got to the store after the stone ground grits were sold out. We will grind more next year. By the way, they are very rich and creamy. Thanks to LCCA TO THE EDITOR The Lincoln County Steer and Heifer Showteam would like to express a sincere thank you to the Lincoln County Cattlemen's Association and the individuals who donated to the showteam at the recent cattlemen's meeting. Your generosity is greatly appreciated by the entire showteam and their families. Again, thank you for your support. LC STEER AND HEIFER SHOWTEAM |
