John Richard Hawkins

JOHN RICHARD HAWKINS
Mr. John Richard Hawkins, 85, of Sunrise Drive, entered into rest on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 in Augusta, Georgia.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 21 at Lincolnton United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Hinson officiating.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be past and present members of the Future Farmers of America and members of the American Legion Post 194.

Mr. Hawkins was the son of the late John Preston and Pearl Bonner Hawkins of Gray, Ga. He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Georgia and then served three years in the United States Army during World War II in India. Mr. Hawkins later received a Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision. He taught vocational agriculture from 1946-1985 at Lincoln County High School. While there, he served as football coach, teacher, assistant principal and assistant superintendent. He was president of the Georgia Vocational Agricultural Teachers Association and a member of the State of Georgia Advisory Council on Vocational Education for 10 years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Cattleman's Association, American Legion Post 194 where he served as chaplain, a member of Lincolnton United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the official board, Sunday school superintendent and taught Sunday school for many years. Upon his retirement from the school system, he became a real estate agent with Jim Couson Realty and was active until his death.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Rosalyn Spratlin Hawkins; two daughters, Cara Smalley and husband, Robert of Augusta, Ga. and Dr. Preston Hawkins and husband, Don Taliaferro of Griffin, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Yankowsky and husband, Alex of Marietta, Ga., Jill Cosgrove and husband, Stephen of Marietta, Elizabeth Head and husband, Michael of McDonough, Ga. and John Taliaferro of Griffin; three great-grandchildren, Morgan Yankowsky, Andrew Yankowsky and Hannah Head; two sisters, Vivian Bridges of Macon, Ga. and Mobley Ross of Lincolnton.

The family will receive friends after the memorial service in the Lincolnton United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Rees Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
