Linda Aaron to present program on preserving family documents Linda Aaron, a semi-retired archivist for the Hargett Rare Book and Manuscript Archives at the University of Georgia, will be at the Lincoln County Library from 3 until 4 p.m. Thursday, October 25, to present a program on preserving and identifying family documents and artifacts. In her comments, Aaron said, "So many people lose the precious records of their family's heritage when a few hours of attention could result in an organized collection stored in a safe environment." During her visit to the library, the archivist will speak on the preservation of all types of materials, from old letters and photographs to artifacts such as clothing and medals. In addition to her job at the university, Aaron is active in many genealogical societies, including the Augusta Genealogical Society, and is on the organization committee for the Georgia Trust Ramble in Elberton. She is also working on inventory preservation projects with Burke County and the Rabun Gap Nacoochee School in White County. Aaron's visit reflects the Lincoln County Library staff's dedication to locating and preserving historic records, photographs, and artifacts such as family Bibles and clothing for future generations. Instrumental in this endeavor was the construction of the John Cullars McCrimmon Genealogy Room which has enabled the staff to widen its scope of interest. "We want everyone to understand the unique value of each family document," said Diane Poteet, library assistant and genealogy specialist. "Whether people decide to keep these documents at home or possibly donate them to the library, this program will be a good first step in keeping our history alive."
