Public warned to beware of possible telemarketing scam

The public is urged to beware of a possible telemarketing scam targeting local business owners.

On Friday, September 7, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office was informed that a telemarketer had called at least one business in the county and asked for a $250 donation for a project sponsored by the sheriff's office and the Lincoln County Department of Public Safety.

"I have not authorized any company to solicit money from any business in Lincoln County," stated Sheriff Lawson. "I am outraged that someone would use my office or my name to scam the hard-working business owners in our county."

The same holds true for the Lincoln County Department of Public Safety. Director Ernie Doss said he has not asked anyone to solicit donations on behalf of the public safety department.

Business owners or citizens receiving any phone calls of this nature are asked to contact the sheriff's office immediately at 706-359-7320. If possible, please obtain the caller's name, number, and the name of the company he represents.
