Food for Thought
By: Lincoln Co. Family Connection

September is National 5 A Day Month. The theme for this year is "5 A Day, The Color Way: Energize and Mobilize!"

It is very important to eat a colorful variety every day. If you find yourself eating the same types all the time, try something new. Here are some recommendations for including more in your daily diet

.. Choose a leafy green salad instead of a pasta salad.

.. Choose a plain baked potato instead of French fries.

.. Choose a fruit sorbet instead of ice cream.

.. Choose beans, corn on the cob, or a side salad with low calorie salad dressing instead of French Fries.

.. Instead of cheesy buttery potatoes, have baked sweet potatoes.

.. Grab a glass of 100% juice instead of that second cup of coffee.

.. Cut back on the amount of cereal in your bowl to make room for some cut-up bananas, peaches, or strawberries.

.. Substitute some spinach, onions, or mushrooms for one of the eggs or half of the cheese in your omelet. The vegetables will add volume and flavor to the dish with fewer calories than the egg or cheese.

.. Instead of having a sugary toaster pastry for breakfast, have a piece of whole whet toast spread with peanut butter and topped with sliced banana.

As you can see, there are many ways to get more fruits and veggies into your daily diet.
