Dog days send Devils indoors
Drug Company, R.L. Crook & Son, Farmers State Bank, Harnesberger Motor Company, the Lincolnton Implement Company, Lincolnton Motor Company, Lincolnton Service Station, the Lincolnton Warehouse Company, Dr. E.R. May, Moss Filling Station, Moss Ice Company, the W.T. Moss Store, Dr. J.A. McGarity, the L.E. Reese Company, and Dr. R.H. Smith.

Due to the extreme heat and humidity, the Lincoln County Red Devils have spent about half of their practice time in the gymnasium. According to a new rule made by the Georgia High School Association, when the heat index reaches 105 degrees, athletes must go inside.

Although no businesses from Lincolnton advertised in the telephone directory, several Washington businesses did including the Washington Market, under the ownership of A.A. Marshall; Lucas Jewelry Company, which also sold radios, refrigerators, ranges, and washing machines; and Jackson Grocery Store, which provided "Prompt Delivery Service."

A copy of the Georgia Continental Telephone Company Directory from the summer of 1940 was recently presented to the Lincoln County Historical Society by Lamar (pictured) and Ruth Garrard. The document has been archived in the genealogy department at the Lincoln County Library. .. "How to speak: Speak slowly, clearly, and directly into the telephone with the lips about half an inch from the mouth-piece. Your voice will carry much better if you do so."

.. "To recall operator: On a common battery telephone (one where you signal the operator by merely lifting the receiver from the hook) to recall the operator on a connection, move the receiver hook up and down slowly three or four times.
