Students compete in Olympiad

LCMS students Ashley Asbell and Tyler Cole received embroidered patches for ranking in the top 50 percent of all Math Olympiad contestants worldwide.
Several sixth-grade students at LCMS were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide participating in the 2006-2007 Math Olympiad.

The middle school students took part in a series of five monthly contests, consisting of five problems each, as well as weekly practice sessions under the supervision of gifted teacher Jan Bruns, who taught the students how to solve unusual and difficult problems and to think creatively.

The students responded well and were all recognized for their participation in the program. In addition, Ashley Asbell was awarded a trophy for posting the highest individual score on the school team, and both Asbell and Tyler Cole received an embroidered patch for ranking in the top 50 percent of all contestants worldwide.

In her comments, Bruns said, "The students at LCMS embraced the obstacles presented by the Math Olympiad with enthusiasm and eagerness. Congratulations on a job well done!"

Since 1979, the Math Olympiad program has provided schools with challenging, thought-provoking problems designed to stretch the abilities of students in grades 4 through 8. The program serves over 4,500 teams nationally and approximately 1,800 teams in 32 countries.
