Math Game Night was held recently at LCES for parents/student teams hosted by Mrs. Mollie Wagoner, Title 1 Parent Involvement Coordinator, Mrs. Bridgette Cliatt, 3rd grade teacher, and Mrs. Kelly Phillips, Special Education teacher.
Participants were divided into groups by grades, consisting of parent/ student teams and for the first part of the hour the teams played games using a deck of playing cards. Suggestions of relevant card games for the various age groups were found in "Math is in the Cards" an article by Michael Naylor highlighting how a deck of cards may be utilized to help learn math skills.
The last part of the hour, the groups were introduced to Marilyn Burns' concept of using various books in learning math skills.
Mrs. Wagoner led the Pre-K and kindergarten family pairs playing the card game "More or Less" and used M & Ms and the M & M Counting Book by Barbara Barbieri McGrath for practicing adding and subtracting math skills.
Mrs. Phillips led the first through second grades playing the card game "Make 10" and used the book, Count to a Million by Jerry Pallotta, in practicing place value using dice.
Third through fifth grades, led by Mrs. Cliatt, played the card game, "Build the Number." Using the book, The Door Bell Rang by Pat Hutchins, the parent/student teams practiced division skills.
Prizes were drawn every 15 minutes for each grade during Math Game Night. Each family team took their deck of playing cards home for practicing math skills.
The two classrooms with the most attendance received a pizza party for their homeroom. Winning the pizza were Ms. Parnelle's fourth grade homeroom for third through fifth grades and Mrs. Pam Norman's second grade homeroom for Pre-K through second grades. Congratulations to those teachers, parents, and students. Thank you PTO for providing the pizza for the winners.
