Community Calendar

Little League registration

Lincoln County Little League registration is currently underway at three convenient locations, Cliatt Crossing, Farmers and Merchants Bank and Goldman & Wengrow. Girls and boys age 5 - 16 are encouraged to sign up for a great season of baseball. Deadline to register is Feb. 16.

Skills evaluation will be held Feb. 24. For more information, please contact Dan Rosser at 359-4116 or Andy Wengrow at 706-401-9597.

Youth group trip

If you are planning on traveling to Disney World with the Newberry Baptist Church Youth Group this year, you will need to contact one of the following coordinators as soon as possible. There are only 15 seats left! A deposit is needed to secure a seat.

Space available

The Lincoln County Pre-K Program has spaces available at this time for the 2006 - 2007 school year.

Children must have been four years of age on or before September 1. Children may attend who ae five years of age. The family must be a resident of Lincoln County.

Parents interested in enrolling their child should contact Mollie Wagoner, Pre-K Resource Coordinator, by calling 706-359-5244 during regular school hours.

LWREA to meet

The Lincoln-Wilkes Retired Educators Association (LWREA) will meet Thurs., Feb. 8 at Southern Elegance Bed and Breakfast, 115 West Robert Toombs Avenue, Washington, at 11 a.m.

Please bring your awards and recognition sheet. All members, retired educators, and anyone who plans to retire from the field of education, are invited to attend.

Battle of Kettle Creek

The Battle of Kettle Creek will be held Feb. 11, 2 -4 p.m., at Elijah Clark Gravesite.

The commemoration of the 228th Anniversary of the Battle of Kettle Creek will begin with a procession to Elijah Clark's gravesite led by the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard, with Revolutionary War flags.

Following a wreath ceremony at the gravesite, the public is invited to tour the Log Cabin Museum and enjoy Living History presentations. Admission is free with your $3 park pass.

Board meetings

The regular meetings of the Lincoln County Board of Elections and Voter Registration will be held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. The meetings will be held at the Board of Elections, The Lincoln Center, 160 May Ave., Lincolnton, GA 30817, any changes to the schedule dates or alternate dates for meetings occurring on holidays will be posted.

Pastor appreciation

Freedom Ministries Church family invites everyone to pastor appreciation for Franklin Jones, to be held at The Lincoln Center Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.

Spaghetti supper

St. Paul United Methodist Church will have its Valentine Spaghetti Supper Sat., Feb. 10 from 5:30 - 8 p.m. dine in or take out. Cost is $6 a plate for adults, $3 a plate for children.

Reunion meeting

The Lincoln County Training Class of 1942 - 1965 will have a class meeting Sun., Feb. 11, 4 p.m. at the library. Please come and bring your new ideas so we can plan for our class reunion this year.

Singles day

Singles Day will be observed at Newberry Missionary Baptist Church on Sun., Feb. 11 at 9:15 a.m. during regular worship service. Rev. Willie J. White is pastor.

Old cards wanted

All old Christmas, birthday, holiday or all occasion cards are needed for the art class at Lincoln County Elementary School. If you have some, please drop them by the school or contact Mrs. Kelly.

TIA Helping Hand

The original Clothes Closet, located on Firetower Rd., has reopened, now as T.I.A. Community Helping Hand. All proceeds will go toward the Lincoln County Food Pantry and emergency needs of the community, 50/50.

Mobile mammography

The University Mobile Mammography Unit will be at the Lincoln County Health Department on February 20 and March 13.

Screening mammograms for women age 40 and above are usually covered by private insurance and Medicare. Call the health department at 359-3154 for more information

Free legal help

Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) staff will be in Lincoln County to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal, non-criminal, help on a first-come, first-serve basis at The Lincoln County Senior Center, 160 May Ave., on Wed., Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

If you are unable to meet with them on this date, you may call them any day at 1-800-248-6697.

Donations welcomed

The Lincoln County Food Pantry welcomes contributions. Your donations are tax deductible. You may mail your contributions to: The Lincoln County Food Pantry, P.O. Box 473, Lincolnton, GA 30817. Thank you for your support.

Valentine retreat

The annual Valentine Retreat sponsored by the Lincoln County Sunday School Union, will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Sat., Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Fred Perriman is pastor.

Garden club to meet

The Pine Needle Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Mon., Feb. 12 in the Dova Partridge Annex of the Lincoln County Library. Brenda Holder will be in charge of the program. February is the deadline for membership dues. All members are encouraged to attend and visitors are welcome.

Moore to speak

Renowned author and Bible teacher Beth Moore will speak to tens of thousands of women across North America in a live satellite simulcast based on her new book Get Out of That Pit on Sat., Feb. 24 at McCormick First Baptist Church from 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Valentine's dinner

Jones Chapel will have a Valentine's Day Dinner on Sat., Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. for couples and single adults. Please bring a covered dish, everything else will be provided, fun, food, fellowship, games and prizes. Jones Chapel is located at 2322 Thomson Hwy., Lincolnton.

Boat Smart class

The Thurmond Lake Sail & Power Squadron is offering Boat Smart classes in five Wednesday sessions from 3 - 5 p.m. beginning Feb. 28. Classes will be held at the McCormick Public Library, 201 Railroad Ave., McCormick.

It's Girl Scout Cookie time again!

Starting Feb. 23, you can find Girl Scouts at many of your local merchants selling your favorite Girl Scout cookie varieties. Make sure to look for this year's new cookie, Sugar Free Little Brownie! Girl Scout cookies will be available for order or purchase until Tues., March 20.

ACS offers RtoR prog.

The American Cancer Society now offers its Road to Recovery program to cancer patients in Lincoln County who need transportation to and from their treatments, free of charge. Drivers are trained society volunteers who pick up patients at their homes, take them to their treatment and drive them back home.

Women on the Move

St. Luke Baptist Church will have its annual Women on the Move for Christ March 10. Guest speaker will be Anita Pryor. Everyone is invited to attend. Alvin Rivers is pastor.

All Relay for Life team captains are invited to 2007 Team Captain University, Expedition Relay: Preparing You for the quest, to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 20 at Augusta Technical College in Thomson.

Benefit concert

The Lincoln County Mass Choir is sponsoring a benefit concert to solicit funds for the Barbara Stokes Elam Scholarship. The concert will be held at 6 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 17 at Mulberry CME Church.

CCLC to meet

Concerned Citizens of Lincoln County will meet Thurs., Feb. 15, 6:30 p.m. at the Lincoln County Library. Guest speaker will be Ernie Doss, Director of Department of Public Safety. Everyone is invited to come and be a part of the CCLC.

Auxiliary to meet

The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 194 will meet Feb. 8, 2007 for their monthly meeting at the post home at 7:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring cream corn/whole kernel corn, canned tomatoes or veggies for the food pantry.

SALS to meet

The Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 194 will meet Feb. 13, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. at the post home. Members are asked to please attend, plans are being made for the turkey shoot Feb. 24 and the drawing for the gun at the March 24, turkey shoot.

Fund set up for Myers

A fund has been established at Farmers State Bank to help Ray Myers with medical expenses. Ray has recently been diagnosed with cancer and has a long and expensive road ahead of him. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Anthony Chapel's regular monthly breakfast will be held Sun., Feb. 11 beginning at 8 a.m.

Get free help with your tax returns with AARP Tax-Aide. Their free service can answer most of the tax issues faced by low and middle income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older.

NAACP banquet

Lincoln County Branch #5213 NAACP Annual Banquet will be held on Sat., Feb. 24, 7 p.m. at Faith Tabernacle Family Life Center, 249 Faith Lane, Lincolnton.

Guest speaker will be Rev. Melvin Adams, president of the 10th District GMBC of Georgia, Inc. Music will be provided by Newberry Mass Choir.

Black History prog.

Black History Observance will be held at Mulberry C.M.E. Church on Sun., Feb. 11 at 10:30 a.m. Keynote speaker will be Hon. Charles Steele, Jr., National President of Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Special guests will be elected officials, educators and civil/religion leaders.

Drawing to be held

The Sons of American Legion Squadron 194 will hold a drawing on Sat., March 24, at the turkey shoot, for a Remington 1187 Sportsman 12 gauge black synthetic 2 ¾ inch and 3 inch Rem-Choke Barrel. You do not have to be present to win. Tickets are $2 or three for $5. Contact any Sons member for tickets. All proceeds will benefit the Sons.

Evening of praise

Solomon Pool Deliverance Ministries of Lincolnton will have an evening of praise and worship on Sat., Feb. 10 at 5 p.m. featuring different groups and individuals from around the CSRA.

TIA/NAACP to meet

Twilight/NAACP will hold their regular monthly meeting Feb. 12, 7:30 p.m. at Mulberry C.M.E. Church, 5129 Double Branches Road. Everyone is invited.

Flu vaccines

The Lincoln County Health Department has the flu vaccine available. The public is advised to call the health dept. at 706-359-3154 to confirm availability.

Learn sign language

ABC-123's of American Sign Language: A Children's Sign Language Course will be held on Sat., Feb. 10, 17 and 24 at 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. in the MCG Children's Medical Center classroom (BT 1809).

The course teaches basic sign language to children ages 6 to 12 through fun activities, games and skills practice. Those interested in learning another language or in communicating with those who are hearing-impaired are encouraged to sign up. Presented by MCG Health System.

Arbor Day activity

Arbor Day Activity will be held at Elijah Clark State Park on Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. beside the cemetery. Join our volunteers as we prepare the ground for an April planting in our 1700s vintage garden. Admission is free with your $3 park pass.

Our colonial garden was begun in October 2006 with a grant from the Georgia Master Gardeners Association through the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). RSVP and resident volunteers planted daffodils, lilies, and irises around Elijah Clark's gravesite, and staked off two garden plots nearby. The plots were covered with newspaper and mulch for the winter, to soften and prepare the ground for work in February.

Classic Re-Runs is a non profit clothes shop specializing in good quality, lightly worn clothes for all sizes. They also have household items, dishes, and what-knots. All money is used exclusively for people with a medical emergency in Lincoln County. Donations are tax deductible.
