DHR accepting applications for low income assistance
The Department of Human Resources (DHR) is providing cooling assistance for low income Georgians through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The $6.4 million federally funded program will provide much needed assistance to those who are experiencing added financial strain in paying their power bills due to recent high temperatures. The state expects to serve approximately 24,000 low income households.
Eligible families may apply for LIHEAP assistance beginning October 1, however emergency assistance may be available to those who have been disconnected. Applicants must apply for assistance at their local community action agencies.
To qualify for the LIHEAP program, applicants must have a yearly household income less than or equal to 150% of the federal poverty guidelines, as defined by the US Department of Health and Human Services. For a one-person household, that would be $15,315; for two people $20,535; for three people $25,755; for four people $30,975; for five people $36,195; for six people $41,415; for seven people $46,635; for eight people $51,855; and for each additional person, add $5,220 in household income. The maximum assistance per household will be $250.00.
To apply, applicants must bring a copy of their most recent energy bill, proof of household income, a valid Social Security Number, and proof of citizenship.
The LIHEAP program is operated on a first come, first served basis within each region served by a local community action agency. Applicants are urged to call 800-869-1150 or visit http://gcaaonline.org to locate the nearest community action agency in their area.
