      Secretary of State Karen Handel today launched a website and toll-free hotline to provide information to voters about photo identification requirements for in-person voting beginning with the September 18 Special Elections.       BRIGHT COLORS Caladiums need generous amounts of water and fertilizer to continuously produce new leaves during the summer, say experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service. Toys tainted with lead being recalled
      Parents who recently purchased painted toys from Fisher-Price, the toy company owned by Mattel, are being advised to keep any toys they think may be tainted away from children. Toys containing lead in excess of permissible levels are being recalled including Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, and other children's toys.

Heat wave may cause serious illness and respiratory problems
      Each year heat causes about 400 deaths across the nation according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Serious heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion can be prevented by taking precautionary measures when outside temperatures begin to climb the scale.

Green beans recalled
      Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin informs consumers of the voluntary recall of French Style Green Beans that have the potential to be contaminated with harmful organisms including Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that produce a toxin that can cause botulism. Lakeside Foods, Inc. of Manitowoc, Wis. has initiated a recall of 15,000 cases of its 14.

Historical society hosts covered dish lunch for meeting Aug. 1
      The Lincoln County Historical Society met on August 1, 2007 for a covered dish lunch. Over 50 members and guests were present. Special guests were grandchildren who zoomed out after the meal to play in the park. All agreed there was enough food to feed the crowd all over again when everyone was finished.

Is West Nile Virus a threat in your area this year?
      Cases of West Nile Virus have increased four-fold over the same time last year, potentially signaling an epidemic in certain areas, according to researchers at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). So far, 122 cases have been registered nationally, up from 33 at the same time last year, with 42 brain infections and three deaths reported this year.

Quick response contains hay field fire
     A fire, which started at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, destroyed approximately 10 acres of land owned by Edwin Drinkard on the Augusta Highway. According to Ernie Doss, director of the Lincoln County Department of Public Safety, Talmadge Reed was having the hay cut on the property when a hay baler overheated, burst into flames, and set the field on fire. With temperatures well over 100 degrees, none of the firemen were injured in the blaze, which was under control by 4 p.m. In addition to the Lincoln County Department of Public Safety, other agencies on the scene included Martin's Crossroads VFD, Loco VFD, Midway VFD, the Georgia Forestry Unit, and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
