Instead of severing the clump in half, try jiggling the roots apart with two sharp spading forks. This takes more time, but damages fewer roots than cutting the clump apart.

GFC reports on impact of spring wildfires in Ga.
      Georgia Forestry Commission officials have calculated the impact of the spring wildfires in south Georgia, and the results are unlike anything seen in state history. More forestland was consumed, more timber was lost, and more financial losses are being felt from these fires in Georgia than has ever been recorded.

Allow only the terminal bud to develop in larger varieties. A single stalk is the best. Adequate support must be provided to prevent wind damage. And remember to water it well.

Old trees die hard
      There's no telling what this red oak has seen while watching over Washington Street for the past 100 or so years - horses, mules, wagons, T-Models, Cadillacs with fins, skateboards, motorcycles, and hybrid Hondas. Sadly, the tree was dead and had to be cut down.
