Meet Tom Poland
      An Afternoon with an author, sponsored by Lincoln County Friends of the Library, will be held Sunday afternoon, April 29, 2 p.m. at the library. Tom Poland, author of Forbidden Island...An Island Called Sapelo, will speak on inspiration for a novel, the writing process, and the road to publication. A book signing will follow. Light refreshments will be served. The public is invited.

Mystery weekend
      Mistletoe State Park will have a fun-filled murder mystery weekend April 20-22, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday with the murderer being revealed at Sunday's breakfast. Cost is $99 per person and registration is limited to 25. To register call the park at 706-541-0321, deadline is Fri., April 14.

McCormick Lions Club to host golf tournament May 2
      The McCormick County Lions Club will hold its annual golf tournament on Wed., May 2, at Hickory Knob State Park. The format will be Captain's Choice/Shotgun Start at 1:30 p.m. with lots of tournament and raffle prizes for red, white, and gold tee players. The $50 per person entry fee includes drinks and a steak cookout at the Barn following play.

BLOSSOM-END ROT
      In most cases, blossom-end rot on tomatoes, peppers, squash and watermelons can be prevented, say experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service. Maintaining uniform soil moisture by mulching and watering correctly. Plant in well-drained soil and don't cultivate deeper than 1 inch within 1 foot of the plant. And avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers.

DISINFECT PRUNERS
      Disinfect pruners between cuts when removing diseased tissue from plants, say experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service. Most authorities recommend a 1:10 solution of bleach and water. But it can be cumbersome to carry a bucket of this mix about in the garden. The solution is corrosive, too, and must be rinsed from tools after use.
