Commissioner Irvin issues warning on pet treats sold at area retailers
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin is alerting pet owners to a nationwide recall of a pet treat sold at Target, PetSmart and other national retailers. The treat, fed to dogs, cats and ferrets, may contain Salmonella.
Dingo® CHICK'N JERKY treats, produced by Cincinnati-based Eight in One, Inc., a division of United Pet Group, Inc., is being voluntarily recalled because the product may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The bacteria, harmful to both animals and humans, have the possibility of causing serious infection and discomfort. Children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, have the potential of contacting Salmonella through cross contamination when the product is handled.
The recall involves Dingo® CHICK'N JERKEY 3.5 oz. and 8 oz. for dogs. Dingo® Kitty CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz for cats and the Dingo® Ferret CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz for ferrets are also being recalled.
Consumers who have not thoroughly washed their hands after handling the product have the potential of ingesting the bacteria. Salmonella can also be spread through surfaces contact and exposure.
Animals with Salmonella generally will have a fever and diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus. Affected animals may seem more tired than usual, and may vomit. If your animal has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these signs, consumers are advised to contact their veterinarian.
Consumers who have purchased the Dingo® CHICK'N JERKY, Dingo® Kitty CHICKEN JERKY or Dingo® Ferret CHICKEN JERKY may return them to place of purchase for a full refund or contact Eight In One consumer affairs at (888) 232- 9889.
