A missions team from Lincolnton First Assembly went to Honduras, Central America, on October 28, 2006 to build a church. The team consisted of 18 people. The missionaries with whom the team worked with are Larry and Sherry Walker.
The team also went to Honduras last October and worked with the same missionary couple, whose goal is to build 100 churches across Honduras. Last year the team built church #3 of the project. This year the team built church #14.
The highlight of the trip was being able to visit the church the team constructed last year and see its growth. This particular church has gained nearly 100 attendees since last October. Their thriving youth group performed several dramas for the missions team during the service. Many of the current members of the youth group are the children and teenagers who helped out at the job site last year.
The construction team’s trips generally last 5-7 days. Because of the short time they have to work, the natives are often left to finish much of the church building themselves. However, this year the construction team completed more of the project than ever before. In addition to completing the frame, roof, and cement block walls, the team was also able to install windows, form and pour a concrete altar, and stucco the front of the altar. There was a dedication service on Thursday, November 2, with approximately 75 people in attendance.
The team is making preparations for another overseas trip (destination not yet determined) in February of 2008. Anyone with construction experience who may be interested in participating in this type of missions trip may contact First Assembly of God church at (706) 359-7237 to get more information.
