When Jessica Rickerson was awarded a scholarship to play soccer for the Lady Lions at Emmanuel College, she became the first LCHS graduate to earn a soccer scholarship.
The talented athlete is the daughter of Valorie Driggers of Lincolnton.
A member of the Class of 2006, Rickerson played soccer at LCHS for three years.
According to Louise Waters, soccer coordinator and girls soccer coach at LCHS, “Jessica played both left and right mid-field wing. She assisted the striker in scoring goals for the team, and on defense, she stopped the forward advancement of the ball. She was aggressive on the ball, helping the team regain possession and keeping scores low. She is one of the most well-rounded players I’ve ever coached.”
In other remarks, Coach Waters said, “It’s amazing that Jessica obtained a soccer scholarship with only three years of experience at the high school level. Most scholarship recipients have played several years of club soccer, which is a year-round sport. I think Jessica’s achievement speaks well of both her as an individual and the soccer program in general at our school.”
Commenting on her scholarship, Rickerson said, “It was an honor to receive a soccer scholarship from Emmanuel College. I would have to thank my coaches, Mrs. Waters and Jeremy Walton, for my soccer career. Playing at the college level has really been exciting.”
Rickerson is majoring in early childhood education at Emmanuel College.
